Foam Cannon & Snow Foam PIR Calculator

Find the amount of concentrate for a manufacturer specified panel impact ratio (PIR). Measure your own foam lance’s draw with plain water, then calculate the bottle mix for your washer and dial setting.

How much snow foam goes in a foam cannon?

The correct amount depends on the product’s target concentration at the car and how much your cannon draws from its bottle. Measure the bottle liquid used while collecting a known total spray volume. Divide bottle use by total spray to find draw fraction; divide target PIR by that fraction to find the bottle concentration.

The starting numbers demonstrate a water-only calibration. Replace them with measurements from your own lance, washer, and mixing setting.

Concentrate

200.0 ml

Water

800.0 ml

Bottle concentration

20.0%

For products that specify PIR at the panel. A bottle dilution instruction uses a different calculation. Repeat the plain-water test after changing the foam lance dial, nozzle, or pressure washer.

Measure the draw before mixing

  1. Fill the foam cannon bottle with plain water and mark its starting level.
  2. Spray into a large measured container using the same washer, nozzle, and dial position intended for washing.
  3. Measure both total spray collected and water lost from the bottle. Use the same units for both volumes.
  4. Enter the target PIR from the product instructions. Add concentrate to the bottle, then top up with water to the planned fill volume.

Formula and worked example

Draw fraction = bottle liquid used ÷ total spray output. Then bottle concentration = target PIR ÷ draw fraction. If 1 L leaves the bottle during 10 L of total spray, the draw fraction is 10%. For a product calling for 2% at the panel, the bottle must be 20% concentrate: 200 ml product and 800 ml water in a 1 L mix. This is a mathematical example, not a measured DetailRig setup.

PIR is different from bottle dilution

A 1:9 mix inside the bottle is 10% product in the bottle, but it is diluted again by the pressure washer. If your label specifies only a bottle ratio, use our general dilution calculator. Do not use a target PIR from a different product. See the foam cannon setup guide for equipment checks.

Source and limitations

Bilt Hamber’s Auto-Foam instructions specify a PIR at the panel and explain why the bottle mix must account for dilution through the lance. A water-only calibration estimates draw: concentrate viscosity and changes in pressure, nozzle, or dial setting can change the actual mixture. Follow your product’s calibration procedure. This tool does not predict foam thickness or cleaning performance. Reviewed 28 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions about car detailing

Clear answers to common car detailing, washing, interior-care, and paint-protection questions.

What is car detailing?

Car detailing is the careful cleaning, decontamination, and protection of a vehicle’s interior and exterior. The process can include a wash, wheel and tire care, interior cleaning, paint decontamination, polishing, and a protectant; the right steps depend on the vehicle and finish.

What products do I need for car detailing at home?

Start with car wash soap, wash media, microfiber towels, wheel cleaner, an interior cleaner, and a vacuum. Add a pressure washer, foam cannon, polisher, or paint protection only when the task and your skill level justify them.

What car wash soap should I use?

Choose a soap made for automotive paint with clear dilution instructions. A pH-neutral car soap is a common starting point for routine maintenance, but the best choice depends on the coating, soil, wash method, and manufacturer guidance. Avoid household dish detergent on vehicle finishes.

How much PSI is needed to wash a car?

There is no single PSI target for every vehicle or washer. Use the lowest pressure and widest practical spray pattern that removes soil safely, keep the nozzle moving, and follow the washer and vehicle-maker guidance. Pressure, nozzle, distance, and technique all affect risk.

What is a foam cannon used for?

A foam cannon meters car wash solution into a pressure-washer stream to apply cleaning foam. It can help pre-soak and loosen loose soil before contact washing, but foam alone does not replace a careful rinse and wash.

How do I clean a car interior?

Remove loose items and vacuum first, then clean one material at a time with a compatible product and a lightly damp microfiber or brush. Test an inconspicuous area, avoid over-wetting electronics and upholstery, and follow the material and product instructions.

What is paint correction?

Paint correction is the controlled polishing of a vehicle’s clear coat to reduce the appearance of defects such as swirls or light scratches. It removes some material, so inspect the finish, use the least aggressive effective method, and treat deep defects as a professional-risk decision.

How do I choose a dual-action polisher?

Compare the machine’s throw, speed control, ergonomics, backing-plate compatibility, power, and support—not just the wattage. Beginners generally benefit from predictable control and manageable balance; pad and compound choice also change the result.

How long does ceramic coating last?

Ceramic-coating durability depends on the formulation, preparation, layers, exposure, maintenance, and manufacturer instructions. Treat a stated lifespan as a manufacturer claim unless DetailRig has documented evidence, and plan regular washing and inspection rather than assuming permanent protection.

What should I look for in car detailing products?

Match the product to the surface, soil, tool, and task; check dilution, compatibility, safety directions, and aftercare. DetailRig labels evidence as TESTED, USED, RESEARCHED, or MANUFACTURER-CLAIM so readers can distinguish hands-on evaluation from source-based or maker-provided information.
